What is Internet/Digital Marketing?

Internet/digital marketing is the process of appealing to new customers via digital technologies/medium. When referring to digital medium, I mean things like the internet, email, etc. – any method of receiving the information electronically. It is now a digital world; most of our day is spent interacting with devices, searching online for information, and having conversations via email, social media, etc.

Which Digital Marketing Medium is Right for Me?

There are many different ways to market yourself/your business digitally. Each medium has its specific advantages to targeting customers and should or shouldn’t be used depending on your industry. A store that sells product should be promoting items and sales on social media, while a business-to-business company would benefit better with email marketing.

Here is a list of the digital marketing mediums and their benefits:

  1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO increases your organic (not paid) website position in search results. This is the most common, and sometimes the most effective method of internet marketing – this is great for targeting your local market. SEO is designed to optimize your website and build your presence on the internet. In general, this is a way to obtain semi-permanent results.

  2. Search Engine Marketing (SEM), or pay-per-click advertising

Pay-per-click advertising allows you to reach potential clients differently than SEO. These are the advertisements at the very top of the search engine result page (usually labeled as "Ad" or "Ads"). These are great for targeting any area, but only provide temporary results (your ads are only displayed for the duration of your campaign/budget – you must continuously pay Google to keep your ads running).

  3. Email Marketing

Email Marketing is an effective way to advertise your products, services, etc. to both existing customers and new subscribers. Your message is usually transmitted in the form of a newsletter, promotion or incentive. Messages sent to existing customers will keep them involved and turn them into repeat customers. Messages sent to new subscribers will gain their interest in your products/services and create conversions. It’s important to regulate your email marketing; sending messages too frequently will annoy people, causing unsubscribes while sending messages too seldomly will cause a loss of interest.

  4. Social Media Marketing

Social media continues to grow – more platforms and more users. Depending on your industry, social media platforms can become very useful tool for reaching potential customers. Building followers and likes for your business page, posting useful, original content, and boosting your posts to reach even more people are just a few ways of leveraging social media.

  5. Website Push Notifications

This lesser known digital advertising medium is actually pretty useful. This service allows you to reach subscribers with notifications that are native to the browser (clean and inobtrusive messages). The subscriber doesn't even have to be on your website to receive the notification. On a mobile device, these come across similar to text messages. Push notifications are great for announcing sales/promotions, events, etc. that are time-sensitive.
